What "sharp money" actually means
You will see "sharp money" used as though it were a tip. It is not. It is a description of whose money a sportsbook is reacting to — and understanding it mostly teaches you to read a line, not to beat one.
What the term describes
Sportsbooks do not treat every wager the same. Accounts with a long record of winning get watched closely, and a book will often move its price on a modest wager from one of those accounts while ignoring a much larger wager from a casual account.
"Sharp money" is shorthand for the first kind. The phrase describes a book's reaction, not a category of person you can identify from outside.
Why the line moves at all
A sportsbook's price is a business decision, not a forecast. The book wants to keep taking action on both sides at a margin it is comfortable with, and it adjusts the number when the flow of bets — weighted by whose bets they are — tells it the current price is wrong.
So a line moving toward one side means the book has decided it needs a better price on that side. It does not mean the side is going to win.
What you can and cannot take from it
What you can take: line movement is public and real. Watching where a number opened and where it closed tells you something true about how the market repriced.
What you cannot take: that following it makes money. By the time a move is visible to you, the price has already moved — you are getting the number after the adjustment, not before it. Anyone selling "sharp money alerts" is selling you the second half of a move.
