Closing line value, and what it can honestly tell you

Closing line value — CLV — is the one number serious bettors keep. It is also routinely oversold. Both of those are worth understanding.

The calculation

You took a price. The market closed at a different price. CLV is the difference, and it is usually stated in implied-probability terms so that prices on different scales can be compared.

If you took +150 and the market closed at +130, the thing you bought got more expensive after you bought it. That is positive closing line value.

Why anyone cares

The closing price is the market's most informed number — it has absorbed every injury report, every lineup change and every wager placed up to kickoff. Consistently getting a better number than the close means you are, on average, ahead of that process.

That is why CLV is treated as a measure of PROCESS. It says something about how you are selecting, over a large sample, in a way that individual wins and losses do not.

What it does not tell you

It is not a result. You can beat the close all season and lose money, and you can lose to the close all season and win money. Variance does not care which number you got.

It is not proof of an edge on any single bet — one observation of CLV is noise. And it is only meaningful if the closing price was actually captured; a CLV figure quoted without a recorded close is an assertion, not a measurement.

That is why our own record shows the close only when we captured it, and says "close not captured" when we did not.

Try it yourself

Every pick we publish is logged before its event and graded afterwards — wins and losses both. Where a closing price was captured, it is shown; where it was not, the record says so.
