Early line moves usually keep going. They rarely come back.
When a spread moved between 72 and 24 hours before kickoff, the rest of the move to the close went the same way 887 times and reversed 517 times. Over this window, football lines look slow to finish moving, not quick to overshoot.
What happened after the line moved early
Games whose median spread changed between 72 and 24 hours out, split by what the line did next.
Bigger early moves went further
Average further move, in points, in the same direction as the early one.

What this is, and what it is not
- • Where the line went, not who won. A line that keeps moving says nothing about whether a bet on either side wins.
- • One window, four snapshots. We store each game’s line at 72 hours, 24 hours and 3 hours out and at the close, so a move that happens and reverses within minutes is invisible here.
- • No picks here. Measured 2026-10-27 from stored closing data.
How it was measured
Each snapshot’s line is the median spread across US books, so one book moving alone does not count as a move. NFL 2021-2025: 1,418 games, 777 with no early move; NCAAF 2023-2025: 2,447 games, 995 with no early move.
-- per game: MEDIAN home spread across US books at T-72h, T-24h and the close -- (gate-eligible, not superseded; NFL 2021-2025, NCAAF 2023-2025) -- early move = T-24h - T-72h; late move = close - T-24h -- kept going: late move has the same sign as the early move; came back: opposite sign; held: late move = 0
